Over the past 40 years, the Serpentine Gallery has shaped international culture with pioneering and critically acclaimed new commissions and exhibitions of contemporary art, architecture and design, presenting internationally renowned practitioners such as artists Louise Bourgeois, Jeff Koons, Damien Hirst, Richard Prince, Gerhard Richter and Bridget Riley, and architects Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid and Oscar Niemeyer, often for the first time in the UK.
The Serpentine has pioneered a programme which is designed to widen access to and enjoyment of modern and contemporary art and architecture for visitors of all ages, backgrounds and abilities. The annual Serpentine Gallery Pavilion commission (July – October), the world’s first and most ambitious architectural programme of its kind gives preeminent architects their debut in this country and brings the best of contemporary architecture to London for everyone to enjoy. The Pavilion houses a café by day and the Gallery’s acclaimed Park Nights programme by night.
