What is Exhibition Road?

Introduction

Exhibition Road is the cultural heartland of London and the ultimate destination for anyone with a thirst for discovery and creativity.

Here, the world’s leading arts, cultural, scientific and academic organisations come together to deliver vibrant programmes that challenge and surprise.

Learning, generating and sharing knowledge is at the heart of Exhibition Road. People of all ages and backgrounds come to be inspired by and inspire the world-class organisations here; from students at universities, college and cultural centres to the millions of visitors to the museums and galleries.

Collectively, the members of the Exhibition Road Cultural Group comprise the most popular tourist destination in Britain. With the redevelopment of Exhibition Road ahead of London’s 2012 Olympic Year, the area is poised to reassert itself as the world’s most diverse intellectual and creative meeting point.

Exhibition Road development

The Exhibition Road development is a £28m project to improve the infrastructure of, access to and facilities within the Exhibition Road area. Led by the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, in partnership with the City of Westminster and the Mayor of London, it is due for completion in 2011, ahead of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The project, designed by Dixon Jones Architects, aims to turn Exhibition Road into one of the finest streetscapes in London, and the best possible environment for all users and residents of the area, including the 20m tourist visits it attracts each year.

Exhibition Road has received international attention, and support has come not only from the project partners but also from central government and several statutory authorities. The Department of Culture, Media, Olympics and Sport has recognised the project as one of national significance and English Heritage believes the project will enhance historic assets in the area. The Exhibition Road Cultural Group is also fully behind the scheme.
