The Exhibition Road Commission is an initiative of the Exhibition Road Cultural Group, a partnership of the leading cultural and educational institutions in South Kensington: the home of science, art and inspiration.
The Commission brings together leading international artists with scientists, researchers and creative thinkers around Exhibition Road to develop new, site-specific installations and interdisciplinary events across all the venues.
Following a competition, a jury of leading figures in the arts and sciences selected Tomás Saraceno as the first commissioned artist. Studio Saraceno were in residence in Exhibition Road last autumn developing their Aerocene project in collaboration with scientists, designers, engineers and curators from diverse disciplines.
The Aerocene project will be returning to Exhibition Road as part of the V&A's Reveal Festival. On Saturday 1st July, Exhibition Road will be pedestrianised for a day of cultural programming including the spectacular floating Aerocene sculptures which will fly high above the road (subject to weather). These beautiful sculptures cross the boundaries of art, architecture and science and are activated by only the heat of the sun, reaching up to five metres in size.
The Exhibition Road Commission benefits from the support of a leading group of visionary philanthropists who support our long term goal to establish it as a top international cultural initiative in the years to come. Their support, experience and advocacy has been invaluable. We continue to expand our circle in supporting this pioneering initiative. It is a unique branding opportunity, with a reach of over 5 million people, and a chance to establish collaborations with a group of highly respected institutions.
